Withered

In the artwork “Withered” I applied slurry onto the collected withered leaves using a brush. These slurry-coated leaves were then placed into a kiln, where they underwent high-temperature firing. As a result of this process, the leaves transformed into ash and gas, while the slurry retained the shapes of these withered leaves. The forms captured in the slurry have become suspended in time, resembling objects caught in ice or fossilized remnants. The wilted leaves will no longer undergo the process of decaying.

The inspiration for "Withered" arose from an encounter I had when I came across fallen leaves on the roadside. Upon first glance, these leaves resembled lifeless birds lying on their backs, their wings contorted. With the intention of preserving this poignant scene, I coated these withered leaves with clay. Following high-temperature firing, the organic matter within the leaves was consumed, leaving behind only the ceramic shell.
Similarly, I employed this technique to cover collected grass with clay, almost as if capturing a specific essence of the land. My aim was to immortalize the delicate yet oddly resilient texture, which possessed qualities of both brittleness and strength.
